THEY WORKED TOGETHER FOR COMMUNITY & SERVICE PROJECT 12.12.2015
As part of our unit in Grade 5 English on ‘Identity and Families’ we read ‘Just So Stories’ by Rudyard Kipling which explain why animals have certain characteristics, e.g. why the camel has a hump, why the elephant has a long nose. The students wrote their own Just So Story and made it into a storybook for children using Microsoft Publisher. Then each Grade 5 class read their stories to Grade 3 students during English lessons.
The aim of the project was to encourage Grade 5 students to use their creativity to make up an original story and then give them the opportunity to tell their story to a ‘real’ audience. For the Grade 3 students it helped them to practice their English with different students and to give feedback about the stories and which parts they enjoyed most. All the students really enjoyed taking part in the project. The Grade 5s said that it gave them more confidence in using their English and that they learnt how creative they could be. The Grade 3s learnt how to give their opinions in English and enjoyed being read to by older students.
